Assets and Sustainable Transitions

Paper presented at an ESRC Funded Seminar on the Welsh Addition to Asset-based Welfare on Monday 18th January 2010.

This paper examines the idea of an asset-effect, the idea of social, financial and psychological benefits that assets are said occur from holding assets. After outlining this idea the paper explores the relationship between the asset-effect and the Child Trust Fund before considering the implications of these arguments in relation to youth transitions and the child poverty agenda. It argues that the Child Trust Fund provides an asset-effect which has broad implications for opening up opportunities and increasing social mobility of young people thus helping them to tackle difficult transitions into adulthood.
